Fremont Township’s longtime highway commissioner to retire

One of Lake County’s longest-serving elected officials will retire next month.

Fremont Township Highway Commissioner Bill Grinnell will step down Dec. 14. He has held the job since 1988.

In an email to the Daily Herald, the 63-year-old Grinnell thanked township residents “for allowing me to do the job for so many years.”

“(I) met and worked with a lot of great people over the years,” he said.

A post on the township’s Facebook page thanked Grinnell for his service.

“(We) wish him the best in his retirement,” the post read.

Grinnell last was elected to a four-year term in 2017. It’ll be up to the township board to appoint someone to finish his current term.

Fremont’s highway commissioner is responsible for managing 40 miles of roads in unincorporated areas near Mundelein, as well as in two special service areas within the Ivanhoe Country Club property.

Snow removal, highway and bridge maintenance, road construction and staff oversight are among the job’s responsibilities.

Qualified applicants to replace him must have lived within the township for at least one year, be registered voters and have no criminal convictions.

Candidates with valid Illinois Class A or Class B commercial driver’s licenses are preferred. So are people who have snowplowing experience, can manually lift at least 50 pounds and have familiarity with computer programs concerning maintenance and inventory, among other skills.

Additionally, the position is subject to random drug testing.
